A calm start for young dogs
A Houston puppy's first grooming visit, step by step.
The first groom is a training session in disguise. A gentle bath, a tidy-up trim and a nail clip teach a young dog that the table, tub and dryer are nothing to fear.
What affects a puppy groom.
Wait until the vaccines your chosen groomer asks for are done, then keep the early visits brief and rewarding.
- Puppy visits cost less than adult grooms because the dog is small and the appointment is brief.
- Groomers set their own vaccine rules, so ask which records to bring before you book.
- Curly and fast-growing coats benefit from an early start, before tangles have a chance to form.
- A patient groomer may spend extra time on the dryer and clippers, which is worth the small premium.
- At home, touch your puppy's paws, ears and muzzle each day and offer a treat afterward.
- Return every few weeks at first so grooming becomes routine rather than a rare event.

Before you book.
At what age can a puppy go to the groomer?
Many groomers accept puppies after their core shots, often between 12 and 16 weeks. Ask your vet what is safe for your puppy and check the groomer's own rules.
How much does a puppy groom cost around Houston?
Plan on roughly $40 to $75 for a typical puppy visit. Mobile appointments cost more than salon ones.
How can I get my puppy ready?
Practice gentle handling every day, let your puppy hear a hair dryer from across the room and bring small treats on the day.
What if my puppy panics?
Say so at drop-off. A good groomer will slow down, pause for breaks and end the visit early rather than push a frightened dog.
